Perhaps you hear it all the time: “Have a hurricane plan in place before the storm heads your way.” Well, that’s for a good reason. A solid plan will save your life in the event of a tropical cyclone approaching our area.

There are many resources out there, including these top five building blocks from the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM):

  1. Sign up for county and state alerts
    • See below for a list of links to sign up for your county emergency management direct alerts.
    • Most counties have Facebook pages for emergency messages.
  2. Find a shelter
      • Stay with a family member or friend who isn’t in a flood-prone area.
      • Know which county-provided shelter will accommodate your family, such as special needs, elderly assistance and pets.
  3. Know your flood zone risk and evacuation route/s.
      • Determine if you’ll need sandbags and window protection.
      • Drive the best route and note construction and other road hazards.
  4. Know what supplies, medicines, etc., your family and pets will need should you have to evacuate.
  5. Communicate your plan with your family and friends.
