School Safety: Lockdowns, reporting concerns, FortifyFL

We understand that safety is top of mind for parents throughout the school year.

It can be scary getting a report from your child's school that they're on a "code yellow" lockdown and not be sure what that means.

Typically, a Code Yellow lockdown means students won't be moving around the campus -- they'll stay where they are when the lockdown begins. But teachers can continue instruction.

A Code Red lockdown, of course, is more restrictive. Students are again kept in their classrooms, and teachers take safety precautions based on the school's safety plan. No one is allowed on or off campus until the issue that prompted the lockdown is resolved.

Many of our local counties encourage families to download and use the FortifyFL app, which allows anyone to report suspicious activity and relays the information directly to law enforcement and school officials.

It's also important for parents to keep their contact information current with their school district so they can receive any emergency information directly from their child's school.
